While MD Senate Democrats Defend Maryland from Donald Trump,
Senate Republicans Take a Walk

Another sign of Governor Hogan and Republicans siding with Trump, not protecting Maryland

Annapolis, Md. – This morning, a number of Maryland Senate Republicans walked off the floor upset over a resolution that would protect Maryland from Donald Trump’s harmful agenda.
The resolution would allow the Attorney General to sue the federal government – an ability currently shared by 41 attorneys general – and is part of a legislative package of initiatives that would defend Maryland from the dangerous policies of the Trump administration.

Governor Hogan and Republican legislators are making their allegiances clear: fall in line with Trump’s agenda that is bad for Maryland. Instead of working with Democrats to defend Maryland from Trump, Hogan outright rejected their efforts. The Governor doesn’t want to admit it, but Trump’s agenda is already having a harmful impact on Maryland:

  • Travel Ban Detentions and Violated Rights: Trump’s controversial travel ban – which Hogan refused to denounce – led to the detention of a 5-year-old boy, a Maryland resident and citizen, at Dulles International Airport. Hogan did not step in to assist.

  • Local organizations reported that the travel ban was “tearing [Maryland] families apart” and affected hundreds of students and faculty at the University of Maryland, College Park.

  • Health Care Scare: Washington Republicans’ talk of repealing the Affordable Care Act leaves the health care of 400,000 Marylanders in jeopardy and a projected negative fiscal impact of $2.2 billion in Maryland.

And instead of listening to his constituents who expressed their concern about Trump’s impact on Maryland on his official Facebook page, Governor Hogan and his team were caught censoring and blocking them.
The following statement was released by Maryland Democratic Party executive director Chuck Conner:

“While Maryland Senate Democrats are working to defend Maryland from Donald Trump’s harmful policies, Senate Republicans are taking a walk. Governor Hogan and Republican legislators are making their allegiances clear: fall in line with Trump’s agenda that is bad for Maryland.”
