Annapolis, Md. – Governor Larry Hogan continues to ignore the threat of Donald Trump and Washington Republicans as they step up their attacks against Planned Parenthood.
Last week, Maryland Democrats passed a first-of-a-kind measure to protect funding to Planned Parenthood if Donald Trump and Washington Republicans try to defund the provider at the federal-level.
Hogan dismissed the bill as “not even worth looking at because [it] didn’t really accomplish anything.” It turns out that just a few days later, Trump signed a federal measure into law allowing state and local governments to defund Planned Parenthood.
Thankfully, the Democratic measure was enacted into law despite the lack of Hogan’s signature.
“While Donald Trump and Washington Republicans continue their war on Planned Parenthood, Governor Larry Hogan is trying to treat the threat like it doesn’t exist,” said Maryland Democratic Party spokesperson Bryan Lesswing. “What about the 25,000 Marylanders who rely on Planned Parenthood for preventative care. Are they ‘not even worth looking at?’ Governor Hogan continues to ignore the reality of Trump’s damaging agenda that is bad for Maryland.”
Earlier this year, Trump signed an executive order defunding International Planned Parenthood. Congressional Republicans vowed to defund Planned Parenthood in their Affordable Care Act repeal bill, which Trump enthusiastically supported.
Defunding Planned Parenthood would cut off 25,000 patients in Maryland from preventative health care. Recent polling shows that most Americans oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.
