Shot: Yesterday, Larry Hogan said that he is just so bipartisan that he doesn’t “even like to talk about parties.”
Chaser: On the same day, Hogan announced that he is going after pro-Trump Republican State Senator Stephen Waugh (D-29), because Waugh isn’t sufficiently conservative. Hogan said of Waugh: “He’s voted to override vetoes, there is no difference between him and any other Democrat senator we might replace.” Waugh, who is a Trump supporter, accused Hogan of keeping an “enemies list.”
“Senator Waugh is one of the most conservative members of the Maryland Senate, but apparently he’s not conservative enough for Governor Hogan,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews. “Governor Hogan is a thin-skinned conservative partisan who will attack anyone who he deems insufficiently loyal. He talks a big game and spouts the rhetoric of bipartisanship, but these are nothing more than words. Governor Hogan will have to try harder if he wants voters to believe his act.”
Hogan said he opposes Waugh’s bid for reelection, because of Waugh’s vote to override Hogan’s veto of legislation make it easier for formerly incarcerated individuals to earn a college education.
This isn’t the first time Hogan’s empty calls for bipartisanship were contradicted by his actions. Hours after the tragic shooting at Great Mills High School last month, Hogan inexplicably used the shooting as pretext to attack Democratic legislatures over his school safety measures, which had only been introduced two weeks prior.
Larry Hogan had no problem talking about President Barack Obama during the 2012 presidential campaign:
- “Most importantly, we’re gonna work as hard as we can over the next 72 hours to make sure that Barack Obama is a one-term president.” (Larry Hogan speaking to Montgomery County GOP, GOTV 72 Hour Rally, 11/3/12)
- “With all of us working together I thinking we’re going to do the same thing that Reagan did to Jimmy Carter and we’re going to make sure that Obama is a one-term president.” (Lincoln Reagan Speech, Change Maryland, 6/6/12)
- “This administration has failed… it’s simply unacceptable.” (Larry Hogan speaking to Montgomery County GOP, GOTV 72 Hour Rally, 11/3/12)
- “Lincoln said that you may deceive some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can’t deceive all of the people all of the time. Of course back then he could never have envisioned President Obama.” (Lincoln Reagan Speech, Change Maryland, 6/6/12)
