Annapolis, Md. – Democrats in Annapolis are standing up to President Trump and Washington Republicans to protect Planned Parenthood.
Last night, Democratic legislation that would commit state funds to offset any federal-level funding cuts to Planned Parenthood in Maryland became law. The measure is considered the first of its kind in the nation.
“Maryland Democrats are the first in the nation to defend Planned Parenthood from the threat of defunding by Donald Trump and Washington Republicans,” said Maryland Democratic Party interim chair Kathleen Matthews. “With no help from Governor Larry Hogan, Democrats stood up for the 25,000 Maryland women and their families who receive important health care services from Planned Parenthood across the state.”
Shortly following his inauguration, Trump signed an executive order defunding International Planned Parenthood. Congressional Republicans vowed to defund Planned Parenthood in their Affordable Care Act repeal bill, which Trump enthusiastically supported.
Defunding Planned Parenthood would cut off 25,000 patients in Maryland from preventative health care. Recent polling shows that most Americans oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.
