Annapolis, Md. – General Assembly Democrats are standing with Planned Parenthood Maryland against the threat of Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington.
The GOP threat is real. In their ACA-repeal bill rolled out this week, Republicans in Congress proposed to defund Planned Parenthood. Trump has already endorsed the Republicans’ plan.
The solution. Maryland’s General Assembly Democrats are proposing to use state funds to offset federal funding cuts to Planned Parenthood Maryland.
The stakes for Maryland women and families. According to their annual report, more than 40,000 Marylanders relied on Planned Parenthood for life-saving care, 10,000 people per year receive reproductive health education, and 4,400 breast exams were administered. Defunding Planned Parenthood could affect 25,000 patients in Maryland.
Defunding is unpopular. Recent polling shows that most Americans oppose defunding Planned Parenthood.
The following statement was released by Maryland Democratic Party communications director Jazzmen Knoderer:
“By threatening to defund Planned Parenthood, Donald Trump and Republicans in Washington are threatening to take away life-saving care for women and their families in Maryland.”
“Democrats in Annapolis are standing with Planned Parenthood and making sure that women and family health services are protected from Trump’s harmful agenda.”
“Marylanders deserve to know whether Governor Hogan plans to stand with Planned Parenthood or Donald Trump in Washington.”
