Republican Larry Hogan’s Record of Caving to the Gun Lobby
Hogan vetoed expanded background checks and stricter requirements on gun sellers, campaigned against Maryland’s assault weapons ban
Republican Larry Hogan has a record of opposing gun violence prevention legislation, including expanded background checks and Maryland’s assault weapons ban. Hogan – who was recruited to run for Senate by Mitch McConnell and other far-right Republicans – would turn control of the U.S. Senate over to Republicans so they can push forward their extreme agenda that includes blocking action on commonsense gun violence prevention legislation…
Hogan’s record of opposing gun violence prevention legislation:
- Hogan vetoed legislation to close loopholes and expand background checks. In 2020, Hogan vetoed a bill to require background checks on private gun sales and transfers of rifles and shotguns. The legislature overrode Hogan’s veto in 2021.
- Hogan opposed Maryland’s assault weapons ban passed in the wake of the Sandy Hook Shooting. Hogan campaigned against Maryland’s ban on assault weapons and high capacity magazines that was passed following the Sandy Hook shooting, during which 26 people – including twenty victims under the age of 7 – were murdered.
- Hogan vetoed legislation to require gun sellers to do more to prevent gun violence. In 2022, Hogan vetoed a bill to require firearm sellers to have certain security features, including security cameras and a bar, grate, or security screen on outside doors.
- Hogan refused to sign legislation banning ghost guns. In 2022, Hogan allowed legislation banning ghost guns, or firearms without serial numbers, to go into law without his signature.
