Hogan spent months as a U.S. Senate candidate refusing to support reproductive freedom

Republican Larry Hogan Keeps Lying About His Anti-Choice Record

Aug 19, 2024

Republican Larry Hogan lied to DC News Now last week about his well-documented record opposing reproductive freedom as a U.S. Senate candidate, falsely stating that he’s supported Roe v. Wade “every day since [he] announced.” Hogan – who was handpicked by Mitch McConnell to help deliver Republicans control of the Senate and push forward an extreme anti-abortion rights agenda – refused to back legislation to codify Roe v. Wade for the first four months of his campaign.

See for yourself:

  • May 2024: Hogan refused to say if he supported Maryland’s ballot initiative protecting abortion rights. Washington Examiner (5/8/24): “When asked by the Washington Examiner about the constitutional amendment, Hogan did not say whether he supported the measure.”
  • April 2024: Hogan refused to say if he would vote to codify Roe v. Wade into law. CNN (4/7/24): “[Hogan] dodged a question about whether he would vote to codify Roe v. Wade. ‘I’m not going to talk about speculation over specific wording of a specific bill, but we’ll talk about that during the election,’ Hogan told CNN.”
    • March 2024: Hogan again refused to say if he supports codifying Roe into law. AXIOS’ SOPHIA CAI: “Would you vote to codify Roe into federal law?” LARRY HOGAN: “I think that’s where we’re gonna have to take a look at that as we move forward.” CAI: “So is that yes?” HOGAN: “Whether it’s needed.” CAI: “Yes or no?” HOGAN: “No, it wasn’t a yes or no.”
  • February 2024: Hogan called abortion “an emotional issue for women” and said Maryland’s ballot measure codifying abortion rights “wasn’t really necessary.” LARRY HOGAN: Abortion is an “emotional issue for women across Maryland and across the country” CNN’s DANA BASH: “There is going to be a measure on the ballot — that presumably you will be on too — to make abortion rights a part of the Maryland Constitution. What do you think about that?” HOGAN: “I already took a position on this bill. I said it wasn’t really necessary.”

DC News Now’s Susan Tran: That’s your clarification? You would codify abortion rights.

Republican Larry Hogan: I’ve been saying it every day since I announced.
