Hogan Vetoed Three Bills to Increase Police Transparency and Accountability
Maryland – Friday, April 9th, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement after Governor Larry Hogan vetoed three common sense police reform bills which received bipartisan support:
“The General Assembly’s comprehensive police reform package was a massive step towards improving the safety of our communities, ensuring racial justice and equity, and restoring trust in our law enforcement.
“Governor Hogan’s vetoes show his top priority is not the safety and wellbeing of Marylanders, but shoring up the far-right Republican base for a presidential run.
“These bills were common-sense measures to increase transparency and accountability, some of which received bipartisan support, including from the Republican House Minority Leader Delegate Nicholaus R. Kipke. There was simply no reason to veto them other than spite and political calculus.”
