Annapolis, Md. – A poll released today by Mason-Dixon Polling found that a majority of Marylanders would not support Governor Larry Hogan for a second term. The poll found Governor Hogan unable to break 50 percent support head to head with any of the Democratic candidates for governor. In a climate where the Republican brand is toxic in the state, it’s unsurprising that a partisan character like Hogan would face such headwinds.
This is the second poll this month with bad news for Hogan’s re-election chances. Last week, Goucher released a poll showing that the number of Marylanders willing to vote to re-elect Governor Hogan had dropped by 6 points since the spring, that his polling against a generic Democrat has plummeted by 15 points, and that increasing numbers of Marylanders thought the state was headed in the wrong direction.
“After 3 years under Governor Hogan, poll after poll is making clear that Maryland voters are ready for new leadership and are eager to hear the bold, fresh ideas coming from our Democratic candidates for governor,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews. “That’s no surprise given Governor Hogan’s repeated attempts to cut public education and a Maryland economy that is falling behind on his watch. Once you factor in the headwinds he faces with a toxic Republican brand in the state, it’s clear Hogan’s path to reelection is growing increasingly narrow.”
