MD Dems Call on Schuh to Cancel ICE Detention Contracts Until Trump Outlines Family Reunification Plan

Jun 22, 2018

Annapolis, MD—Today, the Maryland Democratic Party is calling on Anne Arundel County Executive Steven Schuh to end the county’s contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement to lease space at the Ordnance Road Correctional Center until Donald Trump outlines a plan to reunite the thousands of families that have been ripped apart at the U.S.-Mexico border.

This evening at 5:00PM, the Party will join CASA In Action, Democratic candidate for Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman, Anne Arundel County leaders, and activists at a rally at Ordnance to demand action from Schuh.

Bowing to political pressure from outraged Americans, Trump announced yesterday that instead of housing only children in internment camps, he will now be housing entire families in internment camps, but he still has not announced a plan to reunite families that have already been separated.

The Capital Gazette reported yesterday that at least 3 fathers who have been separated from their children are being held at Ordnance Correction Center.  The Gazette also reported that the county is paid “a minimum of about $1.7 million” per year, most of which is profit for the county.

“Tonight, thousands of children will fall asleep separated from their parents and Donald Trump still has no plan to reunite them,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Kathleen Matthews.  “County Executive Schuh needs to follow Steuart Pittman’s lead and stand on principle by ending Anne Arundel County’s contract with ICE until Donald Trump explains how he will reunite the thousands of immigrant families he ripped apart.”
