Maryland Democratic Party Calls on Mitch McConnell to Take Up Legislation to End Gerrymandering in Wake of Latest SCOTUS Decisio

For Immediate Release 6/27/2019

Annapolis, MD— The Maryland Democratic party issued a statement regarding Thursday’s SCOTUS ruling on electoral maps in Maryland and North Carolina.

In a 5-4 decision Chief Justice John Roberts wrote on behalf of the majority, “We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts.”

Speaking on behalf of the Maryland Democratic Party, Chairwoman Maya Rockeymoore Cummings challenged Senate Republicans to take up legislation that would resolve the issue:

“The Supreme Court has ruled that the question of partisan gerrymandering should be left to Federal and State legislatures. The Maryland Democratic Party supports a nationwide redistricting initiative to address partisan gerrymandering, so that all 50 states are bound by the same rules to produce fair and proportional districts for all Americans.

Since Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have already passed important legislation addressing this issue, we now call on the U.S. Senate to restore integrity and fairness to our democracy by passing legislation to end gerrymandering.”
