Annapolis– Yesterday former Maryland House Speaker Roy Clayton Mitchell Jr. passed away. Mitchell was a Democrat who represented District 36. He served as Chair of the Eastern Shore Delegation and as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee before he was elected by his colleagues to become Maryland’s 104th Speaker of the House in 1987. He retired in 1992, but continued to remain active in public life.
“Speaker Mitchell lived a full life, and we thank him for dedicating the majority of it to improving the state of Maryland. Our prayers are with his family,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings.
