Maryland – Today, June 1st, Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis released the following statement on the first day of LGBTQ+ Pride Month:
“On the 52nd anniversary of the Stonewall movement, we celebrate the incredible progress LGBTQ+ Americans have made against discrimination, bigotry, and hate — while recognizing the work we still have to do.
“This month, we’re celebrating the fundamental truth that every person has the right to be who they are, to love who they want, and to be treated equally no matter what.
“Our state and our Party have long been leaders in this fight. Thanks to Maryland Democrats, we were the first state in the nation to pass marriage equality at the ballot box, and one of the first states to add a third gender option onto state driver’s licenses. Progress continued this year as President Joe Biden repealed the Trump administration’s ban on transgender Americans serving in the military.
“However, there is no doubt we still have work to do. Both in Maryland, and across our country LGBTQ+ Americans still face discrimination and bigotry, along with disproportionate rates of homelessness, addiction, and violence. We need comprehensive legislation like the Equality Act — passed by the House — which would prohibit discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
“This Pride Month, unfortunately, comes just days after the heartbreaking passing of Sharon Brackett, the Chair of our Party’s LGBTQ+ Diversity Leadership Council. Sharon was a champion for LGBTQ+ Marylanders and an advocate for all those without a voice. As we celebrate this month, we remember her life, her activism, and her pride.
“Let’s honor her memory, and celebrate Pride Month by continuing to advocate for equality.”
