Hogan vetoed 2022 legislation to expand abortion access, refused to release funds to train abortion providers
Republican Larry Hogan keeps lying about his well documented and extensive record of opposing abortion rights. This week, Hogan – who was recruited by Republican Leader Mitch McConnell to help Republicans regain control of the Senate and push forward an anti-abortion rights agenda – falsely told the DailyMail that he’s “always defended a woman’s right to choose,” including during his “eight years as governor.”
Hogan failed to mention how, as governor, he vetoed legislation in 2022 to expand access to abortion in Maryland. When the legislature overrode his veto, Hogan doubled down by refusing to release funding to train abortion providers.
Anti-abortion rights Republicans who know Hogan’s real record are rallying behind him because they know he could be the 51st seat they need to ban abortion nationwide. Mitch McConnell – who applauded the overturning of Roe v. Wade – told reporters in June that Senate Republicans need Hogan “to set the agenda.” McConnell’s potential successor, anti-abortion rights Senator John Thune, has hosted multiple fundraisers for Hogan, while anti-choice Republican Senators John Cornyn, Eric Schmidt, Tom Tillis, and others have lauded Hogan as key to a Republican Senate majority.
From Maryland Democratic Party Spokesperson Lindsay Reilly: “Republican Larry Hogan was personally recruited by Mitch McConnell to help Republicans take control of the Senate so they could push forward an extreme agenda, including banning abortion nationwide. That’s disqualifying for Maryland voters.”
