Following breaking news that the Maryland General Assembly passed legislation that closes the state’s more than $3 billion deficit, grows our economy, and cuts taxes for the middle class, Maryland Democratic Party Executive Director Karen Darkes released the below statement:
“Despite Donald Trump’s near-constant attacks on our state’s economy, Maryland Democrats crafted a state budget that cuts or keeps income taxes the same for 94% of Marylanders, protects the critical services our people depend on, grows our economy, and turns Maryland’s $3.3 billion deficit into a cash surplus.
“The harm caused by the Trump Administration cannot be overstated. Experts agree that no other state is as vulnerable to Trump’s mass layoffs and steep spending cuts than Maryland. Nevertheless, Maryland Democrats finalized a budget that sets our state up for long-term success, regardless of who is in the White House.
“This budget is a victory for all Marylanders. It’s also a testament to the leadership of Governor Moore, Lieutenant Governor Miller, Speaker Jones, President Ferguson, and the Democratic legislature, who were forced to make difficult but responsible choices to shore up our state’s finances. Together, Maryland Democrats agreed to a budget that invests in our future, grows our economy, and protects the most vulnerable among us. This is what responsible governing looks like.”
