Maryland Democrats Fight Republican-Led Censorship During Banned Books Week

Annapolis, MD — As Banned Books Week begins, the Maryland Democratic Party is uplifting the work of our Democratic leaders to protect the freedom to read and fighting back against  the wave of censorship being pushed by Republicans and their allies who fear differing ideas and open discussion.

Republicans are leading a coordinated assault on the freedom to read, trying to silence voices and rewrite history to fit their agenda. Snowflake Republicans are so worried about creating safe spaces that they even pressured the U.S. Naval Academy to ban and remove hundreds of books

Maryland Democrats are fighting back by passing laws to block partisan bans, protecting educators from right-wing intimidation, and defending every Marylander’s right to access stories and ideas from across the ideological spectrum. Republicans ban books because they fear thought diversity and an informed public. Democrats are making Maryland a leader in the fight for the freedom to read.

“Republians are snowflakes” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Steuart Pittman. “They want to erase stories because they’re afraid of ideas that challenge them. Democrats trust Marylanders to think for themselves, and we will always fight for their freedom to read.”

This Banned Books Week, Maryland Democrats urge residents to support their local libraries, speak out against censorship, and stand with educators, authors, and readers who are defending the freedom to read and learn from a variety of viewpoints.
