Mfume Wins First Contest to Decide 7th District Seat

For Immediate Release 2/5/2020

Baltimore, MD– On Tuesday former Congressman Kweisi Mfume won the Special Primary Election to fill the seat left vacant by the late Rep. Elijah Cummings (MD-7). Mfume will face the GOP nominee in the Special General Election on April 28, 2020 to complete the remainder of Rep. Cummings’ term.

Because Governor Hogan scheduled the Special General Election on the same day as Maryland’s 2020 Presidential Primary, Mfume will also run against a number of Democratic primary challengers seeking to win a full two year term beginning in January 2021 elsewhere on the ballot.

“The Party offers its congratulations to Mr. Mfume and his campaign team for winning the Special Primary to represent Maryland’s 7th Congressional District yesterday.

We wish Mr. Mfume the best of luck in the April Special General Election against his GOP opponent and we encourage all 7th District voters to turn out in support of their preferred candidate for the full term primary election also taking place in April,” Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis said.
