Jaime Harrison is Elected Chair of the Democratic Party

Jan 22, 2021

As Chair, Harrison Will Build on the Years of Success the Party Has Seen

MARYLANDYesterday, Thursday, January 21st, Jaime R. Harrison was elected Chairman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) at its annual Winter Meeting. Harrison, a former South Carolina Democratic Party Chair, record-breaking Senate candidate, and senior staffer for House Whip Clyburn, received a near-unanimous vote at the meeting. President Joe Biden proposed Harrison as Chair last Thursday, along with newly elected Vice Chairs Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms; Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer; Senator Tammy Duckworth (IL); and Representative Filemon Vela Jr. (TX-34).

Chair Harrison joins the Democratic Party after four years of historic successes and an expansion of party infrastructure. Under the leadership of Chair Tom Perez, Democrats have taken back the White House, both chambers of Congress, along with hundreds of state and local offices including governorships, state legislatures, attorneys general, mayors, and many more.

As Chair of the Party, Harrison has pledged to expand on these achievements; building a strategy that will invest in every part of America — electing candidates that know and represent their communities. He will build on the Party’s successes where we’ve seen them, and strengthen areas that need improvement.

“I am thrilled with Chair Jaime Harrison’s election, and the overwhelming vote of confidence he received from the Democratic Committee members yesterday. I’ve known Jaime for many years and can say with confidence that you could not find a person better suited for the job. His dedication to Democrats and Americans is unmatched — he knows the importance of state parties and community organizing  — and he will usher in a new era of success for Democratic candidates across the country,” said Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis. “With his leadership and support, the Democratic Party will continue to organize everywhere, invest in state and local parties, expand the map to create a true fifty-seven state and territory strategy, and elect Democrats who will be champions for the working people of this country. With the wind of a new, Democratic administration at our backs, and Chair Harrison at the helm, 2021 and 2022 will be some of the best years Democrats have ever seen. Congratulations to him and all the Vice Chairs, we’re in good hands”

“I also want to thank Chair Perez, a true son of Maryland. None of our successes over the past four years could have happened without his tireless efforts. He brought our party together and built us back stronger than ever after a tough loss in 2016. We are forever in his debt.”
