Andy Harris Continues On Extreme Path With Votes To Cut Food Stamps And Defund The Affordable Care Act

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Over the past 24 hours, Andy Harris cemented his allegiance to the extremists of the Republican Party, placing politics once again over the needs of the people he represents. Yesterday, Harris voted to cut 4 million people from the food stamp program (the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP), despite the fact that 10.7% of his constituents in the 1st congressional district rely on this vital assistance.  Nearly a third of these households have at least one person over the age of 60, and over half of the households have children under the age of 18.

Harris then followed that vote by pushing the country to the brink of a government shutdown, voting for the House Republican bill which only funds the government under the condition that the Affordable Care Act be defunded. This purely political move may curry favor with the Tea Party, but it hurts the people of the 1st congressional district who need their Congressman to represent their interests in Washington.

Maryland Democratic Party Chair Yvette Lewis said of the food stamp program vote: “While we still have families struggling to find work and put food on the table, Andy Harris and House Republicans have decided to play politics and remove this vital assistance. These are real people. Andy Harris has 28,975 households in the 1st congressional district that need this program. He will have to answer to them.”
