ONLY 77 DAYS LEFT UNTIL THE 2008 ELECTION!
DECISION 2008 UPDATE
In 2005, Senator McCain stood alongside President Bush in their failed attempt to privatize Social Security and gamble away guaranteed benefits to the whims of the stock market. On July 7, 2008, Senator McCain told a town hall audience that the way Social Security works is a ‘disgrace,’ making it clear he does not understand how the system works, nor that it has helped seniors, disabled Americans, widows and dependents from entering poverty for over 70 years. Just this past week, he told George Stephanopolous on ABC’s This Week that everything will be on the table if he becomes President, which would include privatization.
TOP STORY
After 73 Years, Retirees & Families Still Need Social Security
73
years ago – in 1935, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into
law saying, “We can never insure one hundred
percent of the population against one hundred
percent of the hazards and vicissitudes of
life, but we have tried to frame a law which
will give some measure of protection to the
average citizen and to his family against the
loss of a job and against poverty-ridden old
age.”
McCain’s privatization
plan would reduce guaranteed benefits and
substitute a risky system that relies on the
ups and downs of the stock market. In
Maryland it would mean over 100,000 retirees
would be thrust into poverty with hundreds of
thousand more perched perilously close
according to study released by the Center for
America’s Future.
